Facemash: The beginning of it all
October 28, 2003: Facemash, which was the predecessor to the facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg while at Harvard. The site used private dormitory ID photographs of students of nine houses at Harvard and asked users to rate two people at a time as "Hot or Not”. The initiative attracted 450 visitors, including more than 20,000 photo-views in the first four hours that it went online. Only a few days later, the site was shut down by the Harvard administration, which charged Zuckerberg of breach of security, and ancroachment of privacy. Later, the charges were dropped.
