The political class has always been ridiculed in India for their ways. Lending credence to such a popular view is none other than eminent chemist Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, currently serving as the head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He vent out his ire against politicians a day after he was bestowed the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on November 16. Rao who has authored around 1,500 research papers and 45 scientific books had a reason to take on the politicians - poor funding for scientific research. Addressing a presser last week, Rao lost his cool and lambasted the politicos.“Why the hell have these idiots, these politicians given so little to us. Inspite of that we scientists have done something.” Of course three days later in an apparent damage control exercise he clarified that he referred to the nonchalant approach ofpoliticians in the field ofscience as ‘idiotic things’. Hope Finance Minister P Chidambaram takes a clue and increases funds for scientific research in the budget.
