New guidelines have been released to get over the charges of arbitrariness in the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awards with the government deciding to grant 90 percent weightage to those who have picked up medals in Olympics, Asian and Commonwealth Games and such world championships that are held once in every four years. Profile and standard of sports event in which the medal has been won will be most important henceforth. This means except for lifetime achievement awards, all others will be given solely on the basis of performance in the last four years. However that does not do away with possible manipulation as the parity of different sports will still be decided by committee members. Many controversies have dogged the awards since they emerged.
