An important pre poll sop has come in the form of minority status for Jains cleared by the Centre after a final push by Rahul Gandhi. The 50-lakh-strong community will now be able to avail of schemes and scholarships for minorities that are open to Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis who also fall in the same category. Since the community is well off, it remains to be seen if it will be given reservation benefits in higher education. The cash rich Jain trusts and temples will now be free of government control; while there will be a 50% reservation for the community in colleges run by it. Other benefits will come in the form of exemption from rent control laws and the nod to teach their culture and religion in their institutions, and also seek government funds for land. Jains are already a minority in UP, MP, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan but will now be considered so throughout the country.
