Protests over the Cauvery issue spilled over the city on Thursday, with protesters blocking roads and marching towards Raj Bhavan to express their discontent over the decision of the state government to release 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.

The protests disrupted normal life throughout the city while the government was busy making preparations ahead of 'Karnataka bandh' called by Kannada outfits.

The stir, hitherto confined to Mandya and other Cauvery basin districts, spread to the country's IT capital with Kannada protagonist organisations holding a spate of protests. Shops and business establishments in several areas downed shutters and the rallies held in different parts of the city virtually choked vehicular movement.

A rally was held by leading Kannada organization Kannada Rakhsana Vedike (Narayana Gowda wing) from National College grounds to Raj Bhavan. Another rally was held by other Kannada leader S Ra Govindu with active support form BHEL employees. Interestingly former Chief Minister BS Yeddurappa also held a protest demonstration at Anand Rao circle. He criticized both BJP led state government and the central Government for complicating the issue.

Janata Dal (Secualr) activists led by its leader Revanna (son of former Prime Minister and Janata Dal national president HD Deve Gowda) led the protest procession to the gate of Hemavathi dam.

The water dispute case will come up before the apex court on Monday. According to reports, the outflow of water from KRS dam has been partial in order to meet the Cauvery River Authority’s order. This has brought more ire to the farmers. The agitating people have demanded the government to immediately stop the release of water.

Meanwhile a central team has started touring in the Cauvery basin. The team is inspecting areas such as Maddur, KR Pet, Pandavpura, Mysore, Nanjangud, T.Narasipur, Hunasur, KR Nagar, Hole Narasipura and Channaraya Pattana.
