Being a country that houses one in every three of the world’s malnourished children, it is shocking that India throws away fruits and vegetables worth Rs 13,300 crore yearly. Whew! Add grains to that, and the figure becomes Rs 44,000 crores. Inadequate cold storage facilities and refrigerated transport are the offenders, and unless investments to the tune of Rs 55,000 crore are not made by 2015-2016, the situation will worsen further. The country currently has 6,300 cold storage facilities – just half of what it needs, according to the report commissioned by Emerson Climate Technologies.
