FLUID MECHANICS TO SURVIVE! With temperatures dropping to subzero, and almost no vegetation, surviving in the Arctic can be quite unimaginable! But quite unbelievably so, a tiny humpbacked arthropod, popularly known as the ‘Springtail’, to overcome harsh conditions, releases all the water from its body to ensure that it doesn’t freeze. The move is known as protective dehydration. And although Springtail may not look as attractive as it did so earlier, the method is rather effective in helping it survive. Thinking out of the box helps, eh?
