The latest Congress bid to woo minorities came from Rahul Gandhi who visited the relief camps in Muzaffarnagar where close to 4,000 people sought refuge after riots broke out in the district in September. Gandhi asked that the state government do ‘more’ to which UP chief minister; Akhilesh Yadav’s retort was that the Congress should tell him how people should be sent home. Gandhi instead told those in the camps that they must go home as it served the interest of those who engineered such riots that they should stay away. He wisely kept quiet about his earlier apprehension that youths in these camps were being contacted by Pakistan’s spy agencies. Elsewhere Sonia Gandhi met a Jat delegation demanding reservation—a shrewd move given that in Muzzafarnagar it was Jats versus Muslims.
