The much-awaited reshuffle in the Union Council of Minister's is likely to take place on Sunday (October 28). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi are likely to finalise the changes in the Union Council of Ministers in a meeting Friday.

The two leaders are meeting for the Congress Core Group deliberations and could utilise the occasion for separate talks on the much-hyped reshuffle.

The reshuffle is important given that there is a speculation that the Prime Minister may induct party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi into the cabinet this time. Sources claim that Manmohan Singh has strongly pitched for the induction of Rahul and other young faces in the party to project a dynamic and vibrant ministry in the run-up to the crucial 2014 General Elections where the party will strive for their third consecutive term at the Centre.

However, Congress sources indicate that Rahul is more interested in the organisational affairs of the party and that he is likely to take up an important post in the party reshuffle which will follow the changes in the government.

Apart from Rahul, names of some other young faces are also in circulation in the power corridors. Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora, RPN Singh and Jyotiraditya Scindia stand fair chances of getting elevated in the Sunday reshuffle-cum-expansion. Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari is also likely to be inducted into the ministry. The name of Deepa Dashmunshi, a known detractor of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is also doing the rounds. More young faces from the party, believed to be among close aides of Rahul Gandhi, are also likely to be inducted in the council of ministers.

The Union Cabinet is faced with multiple vacancies with nearly half-a-dozen of them created last month when Mamata Bannerjee led Trinamool Congress withdrew support from the UPA. Earlier, two senior DMK leaders had submitted resignations in the wake of graft charges, followed by the resignation of Himachal Pradesh Congress stalwart Virbhadra Singh who held the powerful steel ministry. Prior to that, one more berth was rendered vacant after the demise of Vilas Rao Deshmukh who held the Science and technology portfolio in the union Ministry.

Apart from the above vacancies there are a couple of union ministers with multiple portfolios such as CP Joshi, Vayalar Ravi, M Veerappa Moily, Kapil Sibal and Anand Sharma. Sources claim that some of these ministers are also likely to be stripped of additional charges thereby creating almost more than a dozen vacancies, necessitating a big reshuffle in the Cabinet.

It is speculated that among the top-rank cabinet ministers, only External Affairs Minister SM Krishna is likely to be dropped from the Union cabinet and asked to look after party affairs ahead of assembly elections in Karnataka next year and the upcoming General Elections in 2014.
