    With high voltage performances by the past, present and future from the world of music, London bid goodbye to the Olympics with a stylish yet informal closing ceremony. Every Olympic city has its own style of closing the Games with a ceremony that conveys a big thank you to everyone who had made it successful. London did it with music and celebrated late into the night.

    South Africa gave the finishing touch to India's disastrous campaign in the Olympic men's hockey competition with a 3-2 win in the classification match for 11-12 positions. India thus ended their worst-ever Olympics in 12th position after failing to win or draw any of their six matches, five of them in the league.

    Defending champions Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor won Olympic gold in women's beach volleyball, beating fellow Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in the final. It was an unprecedented third-straight Olympic beach volleyball gold for Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor, who danced on the sand in celebration at Horse Guard's Parade after winning match point.

    Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi won gold in the men's 1,500 metres, a day after having his disqualification from the event revoked. Makhloufi, 24, put in a blistering final 200 metres to take gold in three minutes, 34.08 seconds. Makhloufi had been thrown out of the Olympics for not trying his best in an early 800 metres heat. He was reinstated on appeal on Monday after submitting a doctor's note that he had been carrying an injury.

    Algerian athlete Taoufik Makhloufi has been excluded from participation in all further events at the London Olympics after he failed to try his best in a men's 800m heat. During the first round of the 800m event, Makhloufi, who competed in heat five, immediately fell to the back of the pack and dropped out after less than 150m.The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort in the 800m heat and reported it to the IAAF

    Andy Murray ended his unsuccessful history at Wimbledon by thrashing Switzerland's Roger Federer to win the men's singles Olympic tennis gold for Britain. The Scot dominated in almost every department, outscoring Federer on the forehand and backhand and keeping unforced errors to a minimum. Murray's gold is Britain's first medal in Olympic tennis since 1920 and first men's singles medal since Josiah Ritchie won gold in London 104 years ago.

    World No-1 Roger Federer reached the Olympics men's singles tennis final after beating Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in an epic match. The epic third set lasted for 36 games until the Swiss legend converted his second match point for a 3-6, 7-6(5), 19-17 win in the longest match ever seen in Olympic tennis.

    Mexico ended its medal drought in Olympic archery with a double triumph for Aida Roman and Mariana Avitia, who came away with the silver and bronze respectively.This is for the first time Mexico won a medal in the Olympics history.

    Mayor of London Boris Johnson got stuck on a zip wire and dangled in mid-air during a promotional event for the Olympics, prompting roars of laughter from the watching crowd. The 48-year-old mayor was heard shouting, "Get me a rope, get me a ladder!" as he hung on the 1,000-feet-long line.

    France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Milos Raonic of Canada in the longest tennis match in Olympic history. The players spent three hours and 57 minutes on the court, crushing Fernando Gonzalez and Taylor Dent's record, set in 2004, by 32 minutes. The final score was 6-3, 3-6, 25-23. The previous record for the longest Olympic set was beaten by 10 games as Tsonga, 27, secured victory in the 48th game.

    South Korean fencer lost a dramatic Olympic semi-final in controversial circumstances and fell victim to human error or malfunctioning timing equipment. The official score showed the female fencer, Lam Shin, lost 5-6 in overtime to Germany's Britta Heidemann in the sport's individual epee discipline. But timing equipment had not been activated toward the end of the semi-final, allowing Heidemann extra time to register points. Had the contest ended 5-5, Lam would have advanced to the final. The result left Lam in tears and prompted her coaches to file an appeal, which happened to be delayed due to the failure of the team to include a payment with it.

    North Korea's Om Yun Chol took men's 56 kg weightlifting gold at the London Olympics after joining a small group of athletes who have lifted three times their own body weight. The previously little-known Om lifted an Olympic record 168 kg in the clean and jerk, on the way to a total of 293 kg. "How can any man possibly lift 168 kg? I believe the great Kim Jong-il looked over me," Om said, referring to the North Korean leader who died in December. "I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength to lift this weight," he added.

    Malaysia's Nur Suryani Mohammed Taibi, an eight-month pregnant markswoman, will be competing at the London Olympics in the 10-metre air rifle on Saturday. "Competing at London 2012 is one of the most memorable things I will do," Taibi was quoted as saying. Taibi is ranked 47th in the world and won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games in 10-metre air rifle and 50-metre rifle in November. She finished fifth in 10-metre rifle at the Asian Championships in January to earn a spot in the Olympic team.

    Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt has disclosed he had suffered a back injury but had gotten over the problems which led to hamstring troubles. "My back was just a little bit stiff and it caused problems with my hamstring, but I am over that," he said while adding "it's fixed and I am training well over the last two and a half weeks." Watch out for the fastest man in the olympic history.
