As the controversy over Mullapperiyar dam between Tamil Nadu and Kerala is showing no signs of abatement, a UN team is likely to visit the site shortly to inspect the safety of dam.

On its visit, which is expected to take place in January, 2012, the team may discuss the issue with central government too.

The move from the UN comes in wake of the international attention that the 116-years-old dam has gained with respect to the safety and security. UN earth scientists are also expected to discuss the issue with Indian scientists.

Meanwhile, the Kerala state government is signing a pact with Central Science and Technology department for continuous monitoring of dam site.

In this connection, Kerala government has also submitted a disaster management project amounting to Rs 1,034 crore for the approval of central government.
