In yet another blot on the country’s record of treating its girls and women, 93 school girls returning from a school trip from Patna, accompanied by five teachers and a nun were sexually harassed and abused by a group of youths who had occupied their seats on the Dhanbad-bound Ganga Damodar Express. While five officials of the GRP have been suspended for not helping the girls, the men are yet to be identified. Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar has directed an urgent inquiry while the suspended will face departmental action. Clearly, despite all the light and noise, women continue to be unsafe.
