Mukul Wasnik is the quintessential Congress organisation man.

Excerpts from an interview

In the last couple of months, decisions taken by the party suggest that organizationally, the Congress has changed its strategy.
Yes the need for this change was apparent at the Jaipur Chintin Shivir. This positive vibe is clear in the party. Rahul has already issued statements in this regard and things are indeed changing for the better.

Is there an element of secrecy in the way Rahul operates?
This is Rahul’s way of operating. I would not say much except that it is not a bad idea if more work is completed at the expense of just talking and giving interviews.

At the Chintan Shivir, there were a lot of fresh faces. Is it likely that new and relatively unknown Congressmen will be given tickets in the elections?
A number of new faces in Jaipur were those who had won elections against all odds and Rahul Gandhi has acknowledged it as much. For 2014, only those who fit the bill will be given tickets.

Do you believe that in the elections, the party organization will have a bigger say in matters, given that UPA-2 has been hit by corruption charges, inflation etc?
It is true that Lok Sabha elections are fought on the basis of a government’s achievements. But it is not that we have not done anything. We will certainly highlight our achievements. As for inflation, all out efforts have been made to contain it. It is true that a strong organisation will help the party in the polls. Under the leadership of Sonia and Rahul our party is preparing the grounds for UPA 3.
