Sportsmen wait for rewards even after two years

The athletes and sportsmen who made the country proud and won medals in the XIX Commonwealth Games in 2010 were promised special cash reward by Defence Minister AK Antony, but the promises are yet to be fulfilled.

While on the one side Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh personally greeted all the medal winners at the Commonwealth Games, Defence Minister, AK Antony had announced a cash prize of Rs 12 lakh, Rs 7 lakh and Rs5 lakh respectively for Gold, silver and bronze medalists sportsmen.

Sources in Defence Ministry informed TSI that till date not even a notification has been issued because of which none of the medal winners have been issued cash prize which was promised to them at the highest level.

There were total of 23 medal winners who belonged to Armed forces. There were 10 gold medals, Seven Silver and eight Bronze medals won by the services athletes. Out of these, two medals were won combined by pair of athletes. (For details see the box photo)

The sources further told TSI, “The Games got over on October 24, the medal winners were felicitated by defence minister on October 26 and beginning November, 2010, all the forces had informed MoD that the requisite budget is available with the respective services which will be released as soon as the letter will be released from MoD.”

Joint Secretary, Establishment of ministry of Defence, is the issuing authority of the letter to the respective services, Army, Navy and Air Force, to release the money.
