Punjab pockets pension

Punjab may be the most prosperous state in India. Does that give its leaders the right to rob the poor? According to media reports 20 lakh pensioners in the state have been denied pension for last four months with claims of empty coffers. This when the Parkash Singh Badal government has given all ministers and legislators a salary hike between 66 and 100 per cent! It is also spending big bucks on luxury cars and aircraft. The government has called fresh tenders to buy a Mercedes L500 V8 vehicle for the chief minister worth Rs 7 crore. The cash-strapped government has already purchased two choppers for the chief minister and deputy chief minister by spending Rs 108 crore earlier this year Compare this at an average of Rs 250 given to every pensioners, the state’s pension bill is Rs 135 crore a month!
