Punjab is India's most prosperous state and Kerala its most equitable, according to a CRISIL Insight report. While prosperity was measured by ownership pattern of consumer durables, equality was measured by the difference in living standards between the state capital and the rest of the state. While Punjab, Gujarat and Kerala measure high on both prosperity and equality; Jharkhand, UP, Bihar and Chhattisgarh measure low on prosperity but high on equality. Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and TN are high on prosperity but low on equality while AP, Rajasthan, WB, Odisha and MP are low on both prosperity and on equality. Special category states such as Uttarakhand, J&K and the North Eastern states were not included in the measure because of Central transfers while Goa was excluded because of lack of data.
