BSP president Mayawati on Tuesday said that the opposition parties are responsible for bringing her party to power.

Speaking at an election rally in Shahjahanpur, Mayawati said, “The Congress has ruled the centre and the state for the longest time. After this came the BJP and the SP. It is because they failed that the people of the state gave us a chance”.

While she was critical of all parties, the target was clearly the Congress. Responding to the frequent Congress charge that while the centre had given a lot of money to the state, it had never reached the people she said, “We got tired of the partisan attitude of the centre. We developed UP from our own resources”.

She also accused the Congress of playing decisive politics. “By promising 9 per cent reservation to the Muslims, they are dividing the electorate. Muslims should be given reservation in proportion to their population.”

“People need to beware of the Congress. It is misleading people” she said adding that her party was in favour of granting reservations to the poor in the upper castes.

“The Congress is promising to change the face of the state in five years. What did it do in 40 years?”, she asked pointing out that 64 big scams of the Congress had been revealed in the last five years.

Mayawati also blamed the Congress for migration in search of employment.

The last phase of voting in UP will take place on March 3.
