A study by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) claims that popular fairness products contain heavy metals such as mercury, the use of which in cosmetics is banned under the Drugs and Cosmetics Acts and Rules of India. CSE director general Sunita Narain pointed out that “Mercury is not supposed to be present in cosmetic products. Their mere presence in these products is completely illegal and unlawful.” As per the findings, the mercury level of 1.79 ppm (parts per million) has been found in the Olay Natural White of P&G and that of 1.36 ppm in the Ponds White Beauty of HU). Heavy metals were also found in products of Lancome, MAC and Aroma Magic. The CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Lab has tested many popular fairness creams, lipsticks, anti-ageing creams and lipbalms.
