Opposition benches of Assam assembly remained vacant for the third consecutive day today as AIUDF, AGP and BJP members continued their boycott in protest against alleged 'unparliamentary remarks' of Speaker Pranab Gogoi.

MLAs of All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) covered their mouths with black cloth and held a protest in the assembly premises for an hour this morning demanding withdrawal of the remark by the speaker.

The Opposition has been boycotting the assembly since March 27 when Gogoi allegedly told AIUDF members not to 'caw like crows' when they stormed into the well of the house after being dissatisfied with a minister's reply.

"We will continue boycotting proceedings of the house till the speaker withdraws his remark," AIUDF MLA and Leader of Opposition Sirajuddin Ajmal told reporters.

Gogoi said he was prepared to break the stalemate if the opposition members decide to talk to him to resolve but ruled out the demand for withdrawl of his remarks.

The month-long Budget session of the Assam assembly is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Legislative Affairs Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka invited the opposition to come for a dialogue to break the impasse.

"The speaker's remark was an unprecedented event in the history of Assam legislative assembly. We hope the speaker withdraws his remark," former chief minister and AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said.
