Nanda, the Hindi film heroine everyone wanted to take home passed away at the age of 72. Born to Marathi film actor director Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, she came into films as a child, and did five films before her talent prompted her uncle V Shantaram to cast her in Toofan Aur Diya (1956) when she was just 17, after which she never looked back. Her many hits included Jab Jab Phool Khile, Gumnam, Teen Deviyan, The Train, Mandir, Angareey, Ram Laxman, Bandi, Ittefaq, Hum Dono, Prayashchit, Ahista Ahista and Prem Rog. Five Filmfare nominations and one best supporting actress award for Aanchal came her way. She brought a quiet dignity to her work be it as the wife missing her army man husband in Hum Dono or the westernized girl in Jab Jab Phool Khile- a role she played with pizzazz despite having the image of a woman who looked her best when crying. Her most successful pairing was with Shashi Kapoor with whom she starred in eight films.
