Even as the state is observing the International Labor Day by announcing various welfare scheme, but still thousands of workers have no idea about the day as well as the scheme.

The example of bidi workers is a case in point. Even though the Centre has provided sufficient funds for bidi workers, but that has not helped the affected bidi makers in western Odisha, especially Sambalpur district of the state.

The workers here get a meager pay of Rs 45 for marking 1000  bidis after a day long hard work.

As per government norms, all laborers working in bidi manufacturing companies should be registered, but some reports suggest the bidi firms are completely indifferent in this regard.

According to sources, the firms are deliberately avoiding registration of workers as they have to provide benefits of the various government schemes.

Only 1.35 lakh laborers working in 26 bidi manufacturing companies in the district are registered and have identity cards, while over 1 lakh workers are without identity card.

As per the Government schemes, the bidi workers should get medicines free of cost and the government should bear all the treatment cost of a worker.

Meanwhile, in West Bengal, TMC labour union INTTUC is celebrating Labour Day with TMC chief and chief Minister Mamata Banerjee coining the term 'Save Industry, Save Labour”.

“INTTUC has been commemorating labour day since 2010. Due to election we could not celebrate this day properly last year. So, we are celebrating this particular day throughout the state,” said, INTTUC state president Dola Sen.

In Chennai, work force greeted each other on this day. While, the Tamil Nadu Medical Workers Federation(TNMWF) had a special reason to celebrate this day as they recently took on corporate giants in the medical field like Apollo, Fortis Malar and Madras Medical Mission(MMM) and proved trade unionism pays if done with justifiable causes.
