Kissing . . .cousins & more As hush-hush and taboo this topic is, when the laws of attraction are at work, even blood relations eventually get entrapped. The more this subject is swept under the carpet, the more rampant have the cases of incest been. Today, the majority of the world maintains strict views on the subject and have laws to punish those who go against the societal norms. Thirteen-year-old Zhila Izadi was one who found herself on the wrong side of the law in 2004 for having sexual relations with her 15-year-old brother and was consequently sentenced by the Iranian government to death by stoning. Following international pressure, the sentence was relaxed to 55 lashes of the whip to both the adolescents. Izadi underwent the lashes, even one day before she gave birth. Despite the social stigma attached to such liaisons and the dangers of inbreeding to the offspring, such brother-sister couples arent all that uncommon.

Since the ancient times, incest was prevalent amongst the commoners and royalty alike. Even when such liaisons were forbidden in the Roman age, Emperor Caligula openly indulged in sexual relations with three of his sisters! Mythologies are dotted with examples of incestuous relationships too, be it the Grecian Gods Zeus and Hera were siblings who became man and wife or the Hindu Gods Brahma had sexual relations with his daughter Saraswati for 100 years and had two children too. Folklores of various cultures continue in the same vein and yet, in the present, incest remains unthinkable.
