The diplomatic row that erupted between India and the USA over the arrest of Devyani Khobragade—an Indian consul general in New York who was arrested and handcuffed in public and then detained with sex workers and drug addicts, escalated with the Delhi Police barricades outside the American Embassy being removed, airport access for US diplomatic staff being waived off and the demand for identity papers from all US diplomats, among other measures. Khobragade who is accused of visa fraud and of underpaying her maid, is not the most high profile of Indians to be treated such—APJ Abdul Kalam and Bollywoodsuperstar Shah Rukh Khan also feature on the list. However this is the first time that India’s reaction has been so sharp, even though the officer herself has been criticised for not following the country’s law in her maid’s employment. It also helps Congress to show it is tough in foreign policy.
