My heartfelt thanks to Arindam Chaudhuri for the great editorial on the Virginia Tech shootout and the excellent analysis of the situation, highlighting the mindless chase of Americanism by developing countries. We live in an era ruled by commercialism, technology, research techniques, computers, multimedia etc. Many opportunities have come up in the field of commerce and small entrepreneurship, which require skill and specialised training and these are best provided by the US and other developed countries. This has prompted many youngsters to join these universities. Shootouts in schools and colleges across the US have become a regular trend. There is an evident collapse in discipline. The mushrooming of gangs and drugs-related violence is worse than Europe. The carnage at the Virginia Tech University claiming 32 lives is unfortunate, painful and condemnable. The US government needs to take stringent measures; otherwise such incidents will send a wrong signal to students planning to study abroad.
