It begins tense but calm. The MV Maersk Alabama sails off from the port of Oman with its cargo through the Gulf of Aden to Mombasa. On board is Capt. Phillips (Tom Hanks) and his crew. Then it all begins. Pirate leader Muse (played by the brilliant Barkhad Abdi) attack the ship and try to hold it for ransom.

Directed by Paul Greengrass who has a history of making great films from real life event such as the brilliant United 93, Captain Phillips is a film which will make you really feel the hazardous lives and undertakings of modern ships. This ain’t some 1930’s era film. Piracy is real and happening today in the vast, desolate Indian Ocean and boy is it scary.
The star of the film has to be Barkhad Abdi who in his debut holds his own against the venerable and legendary Tom Hanks. With a cool confidence and rustic voice Barkhad Abdi’s role might very well see him getting nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

That said, Tom Hanks himself might be at yet another peak in his already dazzling career. The scenes when the captain succumbs to post traumatic stress are moving and acted intensely well. The film needed acting on this level to raise it from just a thriller to one of the best films of this year.

Go ahead and watch it. It will make you come out of the theatre feeling very lucky that you don’t have to brave foreign, murky waters..
