Soon after joining the Day and Night News channel, Jagtar Singh Bhullar did a story on the large scale recruitment scandal in a Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) run educational institution that created ripples in political and religious circles in the state. On August 1, 2011, in the run up to the SGPC elections, the Vice-Chancellor of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, was shot at in the university campus at Fatehgarh Sahib. This led to the appointment of Dr Gurnek Singh as acting VC on August 9. Soon after his appointment, Singh and Chancellor, Avtar Singh Makkar made as many as 92 appointments without taking out advertisements and went for several irregular promotions as well. Friends, relatives and even business partners were accommodated. Makkar’s grandson Amanpreet Singh, who had been appointed as Lab Supervisor in April 2011 was made the Deputy Director for Youth Welfare with a stunning. His salary went from Rs 6,500 to Rs 35,000 per month. An MBA department Associate Professor was made Professor within seven months of his appointment. All these appointments put an additional financial burden of at least Rs 10 lakh every month on the university. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the chancellor, acting and sitting VC.

Jagtar Singh Bhullar began his career in journalism in 2004 as a correspondent for a daily newspaper in Amritsar. In 2005, he joined Desh Sewak, a daily in Chandigarh as a staff correspondent before moving on to Rozana Spokesman in 2008. He became the first Punjabi journalist to win the UNFPA Laadli Media Awards for gender sensitivity in 2010. Jagtar has recently joined a regional news channel, Day and Night News as a senior correspondent. He is also a litterateur, having published one book of short stories.
