Bengal to get its first Urban-haat in DurgapurIt’s truly a ‘better late than never’ gift for Durgapur as the directorate of Micro and Small scale Enterprises would finally open first ever urban-haat in the steel-city. And as per the sources from West Bengal cabinet, chief minister Mamata Banerjee would herself inaugurate Rs 4.5 crore project on Friday April 13.

With an aim to promote tourism, culture and craft creation all under one roof, the urban-haat concept is actually a centrally sponsored scheme that was taken into consideration in 2008-09 fiscal year. The other cities like Santiniketan, Kolkata and Siliguri are also in the pipeline to be projected as the prime four urban-haats of the state.

Calculating the initial capital cost of around Rs 3 crore for each of the urban Hatt, (out of which 70 per cent was supposed by the center) Durgapur-Haat similar to Delhi-haat was supposed to start its operation last July. But it never took off on time confessed Manas Bhuian, the Minister of Micro and Small scale enterprises himself.

Speaking to media, Bhuian said, “As it was dreamed some couple of years back, the Durgapur-haat would certainly provide direct marketing facilities to artisans and weavers, of course by eliminating middlemen. The project was delayed only because of Left’s apathy to do something good for the poor craftsmen. We have finished the process.” Earlier the inauguration was scheduled on July 20, 2011.

The center had provided around Rs 2.10 crore at the initial level for this haat, and the rest Rs 2.14 crore was contributed by the state. The state also provided 5 acres of land for the project through Assansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA).

Bengal to get its first Urban-haat in DurgapurAlong with the haat, there will be several others joints in it like amusement park and food joints under the same campus.

The haat will also be equipped with an open-air theatre, outdoor stalls, exhibitions stalls, water body with fountain, underground reservoir, souvenir shops, paved spaces, car parking meant for the artisans and art-lovers of Durgapur.
