It might have turned into a fashion statement of sorts, but a fatwa has been issued asking Muslims to refrain from donning the trademark Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) cap as it is against the shariat. Issued in Varanasi by the secretary of the Mufti Board Maulana Hasan Ahmed Habibi, the logic used is that since a broom (AAP’s election symbol which is depicted on the cap) is used for sweeping, it cannot be placed on the head. A cap without the broom though would be fine. Senior clerics have given their approval for the fatwa.
