36 houses set afire in Manipur

At least 36 houses were set on fire Saturday morning following a land dispute between two neighbouring villages in Imphal East district.

According to the sources, enraged villagers of Saijang village attacked neighbouring village of Silent in which 36 houses were reduced to ashes before fire brigade and security forces could come for the rescue.

According to a villager of Silent, large number of villagers of Saijang numbering around one thousand came with stick and sharp weapons and attacked their village. The Silent village is reportedly settled by around 70 houses and a population of around 500. The villager also disclosed that few attackers were seen carrying arms and ammunition.

When contacted, the village chief of the Silent village R Hongprang said that the attackers first cordoned off our village and started to attack.

Meanwhile, security forces have rushed to the spot. While talking to media persons, DIG, Clay Khongsai said until and unless the situation is restored to peace security personnel will remain here.

The two villages is settled by two different communities for the past 50 years.
