A total of 1,313 Indian soldiers won gallantry awards for their role in the 1971 war with Pakistan, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Monday.

These included 959 from the army, 171 from the navy and 183 air force personnel, the minister told the Lok Sabha.

Four of these were Param Vir Chakra winners -- three going to the army and one to the air force, he said.

Others won Maha Vir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra, Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal, Nao Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal.

The minister said there was no instance "where war veterans or their families have been neglected".
