Raja goes to jail
The Rs 1.76 lakh crore 2G Spectrum scam forced A Raja to quit central ministry. The CBI arrested him on charges of conspiracy. Raja's former personal secretary RK Chandolia and five corporate honchos of telecom sector were also arrested and jailed in Tihar. Later, Dayanidhi Maran, Central Textiles Minister, was also forced to quit the UPA ministry for his alleged complicity in the telecom scam.
A special court in Ahmedabad convicted 31 people and acquited 63 in the 2002 Godhra incident that left 59 people dead mostly Kar Sevaks returning from Ayodhya on the Sabarmati Express. The Godhra incident was followed by a carnage of Muslims in Gujarat.
CVC swallows the bitter pill
President of India Pratibha Patil canceled the appointment of PJ Thomas as Central Vigilance Commision following a Supreme Court judgement shunning down his appointment. The Apex Court had observed that Thomas is a tainted person because he was accused in Palmoline import scam in Kerala when he served as food secretary of the state.
Midnight Drama at Ramlila
Delhi police cracked down on Baba Ramdev fasting at Ramleela at midnight, arrested him and forcefully dispersed thousands of his followers assembled on the ground. Baba Ramdev's fight against black money and the subsequent drama that followed brought discredit to the yoga guru.
Anna- Fast and Furious
Anna Hazare, along with his close aids got arrested in New Delhi ahead of his fast of strong Lokpal Bill. Anna then started a fast in Tihar Jail triggering off spontaneous protests across the country. After a 12day fast, Anna had the last laugh as the Government was forced to literally agree to every syllable of his dictates. In an unprecedented move, Parliament in unison, pleaded the veteran Gandhian to call of his hunger strike to which he relented only after each of his demands were met.
Rajya Sabha voted in favour of the impeachment of Justice Soumitra Sen, Judge of Kolkata High Court. Later, Lok Sabha dropped the impeachment proceedings as Justice Sen sent his resignation to President Pratibha Patil before the house could move on with it.
2G Knocks at Chidambaram Door
A finance ministry note emerged from the closets of the Government hinting that the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram could have prevented 2G spectrum scam by insisting on auctioning it. The letter plunged the UPA-II into yet another trouble as the Opposition hustled for the head of Chidambaram.
BJP dumps its Southern Titan
BS Yeddyurappa, accused by the Lokayukta in illegal mining case, stepped down as Karnataka Chief Minister after being told by the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). The party stood behind its only Chief Minister in the South till the end, but had to dump him after the indictment. Days of speculation and drama followed before the BJP could install Sadananda Gowda as the Chief Minister of the State.
Mullapperiyar Burns Again
The two neighbouring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu yet again came on war path over the Mullapperiyar Dam issue. Kerala insisted on the construction of a new dam in place of the "116 year old, weak and vulnerable" dam to which Tamil Nadu opposed with full might. TN suspects the safety concerns raised by Kerala is just a ploy to redraw the agreement on the dam which has a validity of 999 years and to stop providing water for Tamil Nadu. Kerala on the other hand, claims that lives of 3 million people will be in danger if the dam bursts.
